Flowers are so irresistible to women. Men use flowers to earn precious brownie points from their wives and girlfriends. There are even certain types of flowers and different colors considered fit for every occasion. There’s always a flower for every season and every reason. In fact, our hunger for flowers is causing an alarming rate of depletion of the world’s water resources.

Flowers make us feel good and loved. Flowers smooth over women’s disappointments and frustrations. Oftentimes, flowers make us give in to our partner’s wishes and requests. Men use flowers as a powerful tool when dealing with women. Flowers delivered by the giver himself at the recipient’s office or workplace conveys a stronger message than when delivered at home. We like to think that for men, carrying a bunch of flowers is like stepping outside their comfort zones. When you think that your man has to go through that, it just melts your heart or simply takes your breath away.

My husband gave me a dozen of red roses last Friday after our grocery shopping and for no reason. He was not trying to win me over something; he just wanted to give me flowers. We both had a long day and he definitely made my day a whole lot better. It also made him very happy seeing I was overjoyed with the flowers. Oh boy, I just love receiving flowers for no reason. What I’m really trying to say is that I love receiving something for no reason. It could be chocolates or something else, does not really matter. You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving.

My husband was a software developer in the Philippines before we migrated in Canada. He did LPS and Accounting for parishes, HR, Accounting – Payroll, Manufacturing and customized software for companies and government agencies. In bigger projects, he had a partner but for small and medium ones, he usually does the programming from conception to completion. I was usually well-oriented with his software and in many cases; he made me do the training and orientation for the would-be users. Sometimes, he would also send me to do maintenance and troubleshooting jobs for his clients.

Last night, I had a chat with the cashier from the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Cebu Philippines. She told me that people from Sacred Heart Parish have been looking for me to ask for assistance regarding their Liguori Parochial System (LPS). This software is to handle their registry records electronically. They bought a new computer and they need to transfer the program to their new computer.

Originally, I installed the software to two computers at Sacred Heart Parish which are being networked. They reformatted one of the computer’s hard disk and they want the new computer to be mainly for LPS. The last time I visited their office, I trained one of the staff on how to do maintenance and setup the program in case something happens to the current computer they were using.

This is always the problem in small offices. They usually have nobody to take care of their software and hardware maintenance problems. I always train at least one of the staff whenever I do installing and training for new programs but they always don’t know what to do every time a problem comes up. Many times I wonder, perhaps I made everything looked so easy to them that they thought it was really that easy. They don’t even bother to take notes during the orientation. They tend to forget that I was not part of the staff so I would not always be around every time they need me.

Now that I’m a world apart from them, it is hard for the client to ask for assistance from me. I am not working about the same stuff here in Canada and my memory about the different software is fading. Clients should be gaining independence from the software programmer unless they require updates. This is a lesson hardly anyone can learn. Well, if worse comes to worst, there are other programmers willing to do new customized software for them. Question is, are they willing to go through the process of requirements gathering, software development, encoding data and spending a lot?

I can’t believe the Dr. Hayden Kho and Katrina Halili (of the Philippines) sex video issue is still going strong. I think most people really believe the saying, Where there is smoke, there is fire. I think Dr. Kho is morally deficient, not only for taking videos of his sexual encounters but for even bragging about it to his friends. I’m beginning to believe that men who takes videos and photos of their sexual trysts are not that uncommon anymore. It seems that the more we hear about celebrity video scandals, the more people are drawn towards it. It has become so widespread that some teenagers are doing this.

I wonder how women can protect themselves from this nonsense. Women who are video-taped usually did not agree to it. How can you say no when your partner never asked for your permission? It’s usually secretly done without the consent of either one of the parties involved. I believe there is always some malicious intent on the part of the one video-taping.

I guess being involved in sex video scandals is just a matter of luck or coincidence. The only way you can be safe from this is when you never have sex with somebody else outside marriage but then, the world is not black and white. There’s a wide area of gray where most people are. This makes living life all the more exciting, don’t you think?

The deaths of 5,335 school children in Sichuan province last year in China has devastated many families. With the one child policy, most parents lost their only child. The agony of parents going through that loss is unimaginable.

One mother shared her story how the government officials told the parents to just rely on themselves. She and her husband, together with other parents were the ones that dug their children out of the rubble. They were able to retrieve their only child at 3:00AM. Their only means of transportation was a motorcycle which broke down on their way home and they couldn’t fix it. They just carried the body of their dead child while they walk home at dawn. Her memory of that day was so vivid that she still couldn’t get over it.

The site of the school that collapsed in Sichuan, China

Another problem brought about by the one child policy is kidnapping. I’m not sure how it really works but some rich people are willing to pay for another child. The domino effect is that those who got their children kidnapped also lost their only child. In some cases, parents are willing to sell their girls so they could try again for a boy.

One woman pointed out that when two only children marry, they are going to take care of four elderly parents in the future. That would be very difficult.

The government is supposed to take care of its people. Implementing a policy like this has scary consequences to the people, especially the poor. The poor people are always the vulnerable ones. I know the government sees this too but then what can I say? Even a mother eagle in times of scarcity, is willing to give up one fledgling in order to ensure the survival of at least one.

Hatton – Pacquiao Legacy

Whenever you search for the Hatton- Pacquiao match, the internet is flooded with posts from all over the world. Not only do you see a flooding of posts, you can actually see flooding of comments to those posts. It’s interesting how people can react over things. The Pacquiao camp says he is the greatest fighter. I’m not sure about that. I mean, I don’t have all the information for me to confirm that but he is definitely a great fighter. I know for sure, he is the best Filipino fighter ever lived.

Ricky Hatton’s supporters said before the fight, “ There is only one Ricky Hatton”. I couldn’t agree more but one Pacquiao supporter joked, maybe Hatton actually felt there were two Pacquiao’s during the fight. Now, that’s really funny.

What really interested me is a Pacquiao supporter saying that Hatton and Pacquiao already has a boxing legacy forever. How, you might ask? Their May 2 bout can now be considered one of the boxing knockout classics with Hatton being a title holder and knocked out in two rounds. I’m not sure if many people would agree to this but I think a good point is raised here.
