Our Movie of the Week – Terminator Salvation

Friday night is movie night for us. We usually go to Normanview Galaxy. I think it’s the best place for movies here in Regina. If you are really into movies then that’s the place to check out. If you need to do some shopping and watch the movie at the same time, perhaps you need to go somewhere else. I don’t see supermarkets and shops in the area except for a few restaurants nearby.

Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright

We watched Terminator – Salvation last Friday. It was a super action-packed movie. You can’t keep your eyes from being glued to the screen. I like the Australian born Sam Worthington’s character as Marcus Wright, a mysterious character there. Many people think the movie is made for the fans and it really is. There’s nothing special in the movie. It has become just an ordinary futuristic movie since the scene is in 2018. If you are into this kind of stuff, then this is for you. I like science fiction, I think most people do. When I watch a movie sequel, I don’t really try to piece together every puzzle in it, I simply sit back, relax and enjoy myself with the new twists and plots. Surely, there will be another sequel because it ended with “The war between the humans and the machines rages on.”

My Five Cents on Sex Videos

I can’t believe the Dr. Hayden Kho and Katrina Halili (of the Philippines) sex video issue is still going strong. I think most people really believe the saying, Where there is smoke, there is fire. I think Dr. Kho is morally deficient, not only for taking videos of his sexual encounters but for even bragging about it to his friends. I’m beginning to believe that men who takes videos and photos of their sexual trysts are not that uncommon anymore. It seems that the more we hear about celebrity video scandals, the more people are drawn towards it. It has become so widespread that some teenagers are doing this.

I wonder how women can protect themselves from this nonsense. Women who are video-taped usually did not agree to it. How can you say no when your partner never asked for your permission? It’s usually secretly done without the consent of either one of the parties involved. I believe there is always some malicious intent on the part of the one video-taping.

I guess being involved in sex video scandals is just a matter of luck or coincidence. The only way you can be safe from this is when you never have sex with somebody else outside marriage but then, the world is not black and white. There’s a wide area of gray where most people are. This makes living life all the more exciting, don’t you think?

Dishwasher is Working Again!

I am very happy that finally our Frigidaire dishwasher is functional again. The Boardwalk technician came to our place and repaired it. The only problem was that it would not drain. After the wash cycle, there’s still water in the dishwasher. I tried running the dry cycle but still it would not work. It had been like that since December of last year. Hubby tried to reason out that perhaps it has something to do with winter and the buildup of snow that could have affected the water pipes. We waited until spring and found out we were wrong.

I was really hesitant to use the dishwasher before. Besides the fact that we only have a few dishes soiled after every meal, it also comes up much more expensive than hand washing. It uses a lot of water and electricity. Before loading dishes into the dishwasher, you also need to make sure to wipe off the big stuff that is stuck in your dishes. You literally have to do some partial cleaning on the dishes.

Our Frigidaire Dishwasher

I’m still hesitant to use the dishwasher but not that hesitant anymore. You see, it goes with the place we’re renting. We need to use it every now and then or else it may not be at its best after awhile of being left alone. Also, as a housewife, there are really times when you don’t feel like washing the dishes right after eating especially when hubby is watching a nice TV show on the couch. This is when the dishwasher comes in handy. Also he wants me to watch TV with him rather than making noises (banging the dishes and pots) at the kitchen.

The best thing about the dishwasher is that it cleans glasses better than if you hand wash them. The plates too comes out shinier from the dishwasher. On top of everything else, it is sure nice to have a choice. When I have time to spare which I usually do, I hand wash everything. When I’m short of time, like today after dinner, we’re going to watch a movie, then I would need to use the dishwasher so when we get back from the movies, dishes will already be clean.

Congratulations to Kris Allen!!!

At last American Idol Season 8 has come to an end with Kris Allen as the winner. I am not really a big fan but congratulations to him anyway.

I like Adam Lambert more, since the beginning of the competition, I already had an eye for him. He’s not really that likeable as compared to Kris but I am quite sure that Adam had shown vocal dominance over Kris. Adam has more natural talent, add to that his performances at the musical shows must have polished that natural talent.

Kris Allen on the other hand is talented, too. He is the worship leader of a religious group. That’s where he exercised his singing prowess, preparing songs for the church, training the choir and prepare special numbers with the youth. I also think that group must have played a big role in Kris’s victory. I heard he had been travelling around the country, even around the world with his religious commitments. Well, he deserves all the support. He is such a nice and humble guy. It was incredible how he said, “ It’s crazy, I’m shocked. I think Adam deserves this.” No, Kris, the American people have spoken. You should be proud.

As for the rest of the Top 13, I’m sure they enjoyed their journey to the American Idol. Winning is not everything. What is more important is that they had their chance to show how much they were really worth as artists. The American Idol was their stage and they had training there so they could stretch their vocal capacities even farther. The journey does not end there. In a short while, we will be hearing about their new albums and songs on the radio. In the end, the number of votes, an idol gathered in the show does not spell the number of albums, that idol is going to sell in the future. Each of them is going to continue working hard on any opportunity that may arise from being part of the show.

Cast Iron Pan, My Steak’s Best Friend

In the Philippines, we are not familiar with cast iron pans. I did not even remember seeing cast iron cook wares in our department stores there. What most Filipinos use are aluminum cook wares. This is because aluminum is very cheap and this is only what most people there can afford. There are many stainless steel, glass and Teflon cook wares but they are too expensive for most Filipinos.

Our beef in the Philippines are mostly organic and grass-fed. There are only very few ranches there and the sources of beef are usually families who raise cattle for side income. They just bring their cattle to the meadows to graze every day. They supplement the cattle feeds with hay, rice and corn chaff during long periods of drought. It usually takes several years for the cattle to reach adulthood when raised this way. This could be the reason why our local beef takes too long to cook and explains why we are not fond of pan-fried steaks.

The cattle is tied to a post and left in the meadow to feed on grass

In Canada, our beef is very tender, usually grade AAA. I have always loved beef and having it cooked in a short time makes it even better for me. I have learned to cook roast beef here and discovered an even easier way to cook beef, by using a cast iron pan.

My cast iron pan is a 12-inch pre-seasoned Lodge Logic. Using cast iron is not as intimidating as before because there are already pre-seasoned ones in the market and they are ready to use. Cast iron pans is a good investment because they are inexpensive and can last forever if you know how to care for them. Mine does not have a cover that goes with it but I have a glass cover from my other stainless steel pan that I could use when I need to. It just fits perfectly well.

Exactly how my cast iron pan look like

Everybody loves a good steak. I use my cast iron pan mainly for cooking steaks and pork chops. Just less than ten minutes and you have your steak done. I usually just season my steak with salt and pepper and give it a garlic rub and that’s it. I give each side a good sear and cover it for about three minutes and it’s done. I give it some time to cool down a bit to redistribute the juices back to the meat. The pork chops takes a little longer since you really have to make sure that your pork is well cooked.

My cast iron pan has become one of my best friends in the kitchen. Heat is well distributed so it cooks evenly, plus you only need to cook on medium heat. I always get the meat cooked to my liking. Using the fingers when testing for the meat’s doneness is always reliable when cooking with a cast iron pan. Sometimes when you use other types of skillet or pans for steaks, the meat will appear to be well-browned but when you slice it, it’s not as well-cooked as you want it to be.

A Visit to the Local Museum

We went to Royal Saskatchewan Museum here in Regina the other day. It was a warm and cloudy day. There was also a bus load of Chinese-looking tourists there. I could not really tell because I did not understand a word of what they said. It was a Sunday and there were family groups there also.

The museum has two floors. One for Life Sciences Gallery featuring the flora and fauna in Saskatchewan. The other floor is for Earth Sciences Gallery and First Nations Gallery. The museum is not that big but I was still glad we did visit. There was no entrance fee but you have to give a donation to the museum. I guess you could give any amount you want but there were suggested amounts for individuals, groups and families.

The museum has a show about how Saskatchewan was shaped by the glaciers a long time ago. This place was all covered with ice and the landscape was slowly revealed when the temperature got warmer. The weight of the massive buildup of snow was why Saskatchewan is so plain.

The Aboriginal History exhibit is very nice also. They showcase the life of Cree Indians. In fact, the word Saskatchewan is a Cree word meaning swift river. The exhibit show us the life of the early Cree Indians and how slowly they integrated with the mainstream society.

The museum has many interactive learning centers also. They did an excellent job on the learning visuals and audios. They feature living green, about sustainable life and how to minimize our footprint in the planet. They also have Dinomania where the fossil remains of dinosaurs found in Saskatchewan soil are shown.

The people really need to support the local museums. It is there where the people especially the children learn about history, environment and the people. They help us get a clearer picture of the past thus making us better understand the present and the future.

Problem Skin

These past months my skin has been rally bad. I’m having a flare up again. I have been to a dermatologist here in Regina but still as always, I was given prednisone 30mg for one week and diminishing 5mg per week until I reach 5mg per week. This has already become a vicious cycle. I don’t want it this way. I know prednisone, just like any steroids, works like a wonder drug for me but after every last dose, I always get a rebound. My itch always comes back with a vengeance.

The dermatologists and doctors always say it is idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown. Having this disease on and off for many years, searching the internet for answers and reading books about the skin, I have come to realize that every flare up becomes better. I may feel at times that I am at my worse flare up but it always get better with time. Every flare up has a trigger and I just need to figure out what cause this.

I feel I have auto-immune issues because when you have a problem like mine, you will know that the problem is inside your body. I become hyper-sensitive to everyday things when I’m in a flare otherwise, I could just tolerate most things I seem to be sensitive to.

These days, I’m still itchy but feeling much better. I still take two antihistamines everyday because I learned that you only have to stop taking it after at least two months of having no symptoms. I still keep trying new things here, like moisturizers and shampoos but I’m slowly discovering what works for me and what doesn’t work. I just have to be my own detective. These are one of those times when instead of getting immediate relief, you have to dig deep into the matter and find the root cause and start from there.

Crazy about the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

I have been following the HBO Original Series, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency for sometime now. I fell in love with everything in the story. It is wholesome entertainment for the family. It shows there how people need one another.

The story is written by a British writer Alexander McCall Smith. When he visited Botswana, he fell in love with the character of a woman vendor there and decided to write a story about the character. This is where he come up with the story, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency which has now become an HBO Original series.

The main character in the series is Mma Precious Ramotswe played by Jill Scott. She founded The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency in which she is also the main detective. The people in Gabarone, the capital of Botswana go to the agency for solutions to their problems. I love the character of Precious here. She is a strong, determined, unstoppable, highly credible person and always eager to help. She also has a soft side, sweet, loving, sincere and vulnerable to her ex-husband, who physically abused her in their marriage.

From left: Grace Makutsi, Precious Ramotswe and J.L.B Matekoni

Other prominent characters are Mma Grace Makutsi , the secretary of Precious. She is sometimes naive but honest, intelligent and loyal to Precious. J.L.B. Matekoni is the friend of Precious who eventually will become her husband.

I really love the fact that the story setting is Botswana. You can learn from their place, culture, beliefs and the kind of community that they have. You get better appreciation of Africa through the story. It makes you see that we are not that different after all. The people there maybe different but they basically have the same values and problems as ours.

A thought on Climate Change

It is crazy how unpredictable weather can be. Spring officially started last March 20 and we still get occasional snow falls in Regina. Just when I started enjoying the outdoors, snow bounces back.

I woke up yesterday and it was drizzling. A few minutes later and it was already snowing hard. My husband has been using his spring coat when he goes to work for some time now and yesterday, he had to wear his winter jacket again. Guess this is why climate change is often compared to how a woman changes her mind so easily. One minute it’s a yes, the next minute it’s a no.

Spring Snow in Regina

Spring Snow May 13, 2009

Nature works in wonderful ways. It is powerful on its own that we cannot tame it. We only have to devise ways to cope with whatever it has to offer us. It shapes and heals our environment. Most of the time, it is friendly to us if we are friendly to it. If we take care of our environment, it takes good care of us too. Yes, climate change can be very unpredictable but it is usually in moderate ways. When it does change drastically, it makes us rethink our position and teaches us a lesson.

If the earth is only one day old, humans have only been here on the eleventh hour but we have done the most damage. In our quest to develop, we have depleted the earth of its resources. We have also stripped animals and plants of their homes. I’m glad there are now many organizations and foundations dedicated to giving back to the environment, planting trees and raising awareness. I hope the next generation will have a better understanding of the environment in order to better care for it. I also hope we can, not only lessen the amount of damage to the environment in the future but find ways to reverse the damaged that has already been done.

New York in One Day

It was our first time in New York. We would only be there for two days and there were so many things to do . We contacted some friends before going there so we could arrange for somebody to meet and guide us with our visit there if possible.

My aunt and uncle sent us off at the Amtrak Station in Washington DC all the way from Maryland. We had to catch the train at 5:30am bound for New York. We arrived there at 5:00 am. We claimed the train tickets that we purchased online from one of the ticket machines at the station. We still had coffee before the train arrived.

The train ride was comfortable. The seats are reclining and are wide. We were able to catch up with our sleep during the trip. The train has a snack bar and bathrooms inside. We arrived at the New York station before 9:00 am. My husband’s former high school classmate met us there. He gave each one of us a metrocard with unlimited free train and bus rides for one day.

Inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral

We had our breakfast of bagel and coffee while planning on our itinerary for the whole day. It was raining that day so we decided to go indoors first until the rain stops. First, we had to drop by the nearest CVS pharmacy to pick up some umbrellas and raincoats. Then we went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The cathedral was so beautiful in the inside with lots of sculptures and statues and there were so many people. The stained glassed are so intricately designed.

Then we went inside Saks at the fifth avenue just to take a good look around. Our friend guide told us that Imelda Marcos, former first lady of the Philippines used to shop there.

From Saks, we headed for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are many museums in New York and we figured we only have time for one so we picked the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was still raining but still there were so many people waiting in line to go into the museum. We were there just for the paintings and sculptures but there were so many of them, ancient, medieval and modern art.

Then it was time for lunch at Jackson Hole where we met with two other women friends. After lunch we took the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty from a distance. The ride was free and we could also see Manhattan from Staten Island.

Statue of Liberty

From Staten Island, we walked around downtown New York and passed by The World Financial Center, the Dow Jones, the memorials of WTC bombings, the Ground Zero, the Winter Garden and Battery Park. We only saw the Empire State Building from a distance. We also went to Wall Street, Stock Exchange and the place where Lincoln was first inaugurated as president. We posed with the Wall Street Bull for good luck. From there, we went to Grand Central Terminal and our last stop was Time Square since it was already dark. Then we went to Coco, a Malaysian restaurant and we parted from there.

That was how our one day in New York went. The next day we just went shopping at Woodbury Commons Premium outlets. We were able to make the most of our short visit there because we had some friends with us all the way.
